Definitely would never have read this if not for book club. The main character is so dumb. It's like her internal and external monologues are two different people but neither are smart.

A lot of the dialogue is awkward because the author refused to be specific about things like never naming the company her dad owned or just saying 'old slasher film' multiple times. One scene uses the word 'document' about 100 times.

The line about what a rook does in chess, that was completely shoe-horned in, was incorrect. If you don't know the rules of chess, don't bring it up, it had nothing to do with the story.

At first this felt like a rip off of Light's Out, which I loved. But the humor in this was very lacking which is what made Light's Out so good.
