Cinnamon and Gunpowder by Eli Brown

5 stars!! -- I have been on such a pirate kick lately (thank you Our Flag Means Death), and this book hit the spot! It is such a fresh take on the traditional pirate story. There's swashbuckling, there's looting, but there's also real adventure, and a complex set of stakes and heists that were so fun to read.

Our main character is Owen Wedgewood, a talented chef for a notorious english lord, who then becomes kidnapped (abducted?) by the infamous pirate captain Hannah Mabbot. Once aboard, Mabbot bargains with Owen: if he makes her a fancy meal every Sunday, she'll keep him alive.

This book is wholesome, detailed, and so unique. There are descriptions of recipes, spices, and cooking methods that had me wanting to become a better cook so I could make half of what Owen could. I loved that this story was a slow burn (if even that) in the sense that Owen and Hannah are really allowed to be separate characters who grow into their relationship of mutual respect. But that aspect is honestly about 5% of the book, if that. It showed the realities of pirate life, and always kept me entertained. And the ending?
SpoilerI teared up at "beloved of Hannah" cause how could you NOT?!

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the audiobook narrator, either, because he did such a fantastic job that I now want to own the audiobook to so I can listen to it all over again. I definitely think this one is going to be a comfort read for me. I need my own copy now SO MUCH!
