Egyptian Mythology: A Guide to the Gods, Goddesses, and Traditions of Ancient Egypt by Geraldine Pinch

4.0

The book was great. Very informative and comprehensive on 2-3 dozen Egyptian gods and goddesses, myths, and possible origins. One thing I wish the author would have taken the time to include are the dates or date ranges for many of the stories that are mentioned. Instead the author often makes references to events or large time periods. For instance the author would make statements like this god was primarily worshiped during the early middle Kingdom period, or this myth was told this way when it originated during the predynastic period but was adopted and changed during the time of Persian rule, or this cult was a main competitor of Christianity during the early Christian Church. Providing dates along with these other period references would have painted a better picture of the changing culture and myths over the millenia. If you're interested in such things I would have Google and a scrap of paper ready.
