So I listened this trilogy via audiobook and I have to say, I got really invested in the story. Unfortunately though, I did find the final book to be quite lacking and I was quite disappointed with the way how everything got wrapped up. Everything was just so good in the first two books that I was very intrigued by how everything will end but when I finally finished the last book, my only thought was “…really?” For me, that just kind of brought the entire series down because it’s never a good thing to end a series on a low note.
However, that being said, I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books. I really enjoyed reading about Lark and Oren. I also thought that the way how Meagan portrayed this dystopian world was very unique and intriguing – the fact that without magic and being a Renewable, humans cannot live outside any magical barriers otherwise they will turn into these shadows.
Another aspect that I really enjoyed was finding out how much Lark had changed from the beginning to the end. That’s something I always enjoy reading about especially in series – how much the characters, specifically the main character, changed throughout the books. And for Lark, she definitely matured and grew a lot by the end the story ended.
In terms of the plot itself, I really liked the progression of things and especially enjoyed reading about Lark’s journey through the wilderness to try to find her brother, Basil, as well as other humans and cities to escape her own. Another part that I found interesting was the shadows and what they represented as well as who or what they used to be.
Overall, while I didn’t enjoy the last book simply because I was disappointed by how things ended, I still, at the end of the day, found the overall progression of the story to be entertaining as well as the characters themselves. I especially enjoyed Lark and Oren’s relationship and how it felt really natural as opposed to falling in love at first sight.
