Fundamentals of Abnormal Psychology by Ronald J. Comer

3.0

This was my favourite course yet and I'm happy that I passed it with a 8.5. It solidified my choice for the clinical psychology major, because even though this textbook is the foundation, there is so much more to learn in the clinical field.

This textbook is a solid one, but it can be improved. It's the bane of textbooks in a thoroughly researched field, new findings and nuances are not implemented until years later. The basics are very clear and approached via different point of views, which was nice. But the basics are what they are: basics. Symptoms are the 'average' and do not take current criticism into account.

There was no mention of some symptoms in ADHD or autism spectrum disorder differing for women than for men. The symptoms listed were very stereotypical and suggested that most cases fit those descriptives, but in reality it's a lot harder to diagnose someone. Also especially the part about gender dysphoria could be improved by mentioning nonbinary genders and gender euphoria, since my lecturer didn't even know what those two terms meant.
