The Turn of the Key by Ruth Ware
5.0
This was an unbelievably twisty and deeply creepy read. Full of powerful atmospheric descriptions and an eerie and intense feel, it was deliciously dark.
I really enjoyed this book with the traditional gothic haunting style, emphasising the feelings of uncertainty and of being watched unseen by prying eyes. It brought a certain level of anxiety from the pages, and I really liked the way that the author used this throughout the book.
Along with the traditional haunting and darkness a large gothic house can exude, it also touched on the wariness of a house full of technology and mod-cons. The split personalities of a grand dark mansion combined with an ultra modern extension added to the anxiousness I had when reading.
With an influence from The Turn of the Screw this had all the creepy, dark feels of a classic haunted house combined with a modern psychological thriller. The atmosphere was perfect. The characters deep and developed with a sense of uneasiness about them, and the tension from chapter to chapter was immense.
A perfect read for the upcoming spooky season!
