Men, Women, and Chain Saws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film - Updated Edition by Carol J. Clover

fascinating both as an analytical text and as a sort of historical document of where both psychoanalysis and horror films were at the turn of the 80s. Definitely theory (lots of dense and often bizarre texts sourced from freudian theory and its brancing ideas) but relatively readable from someone whose never managed to finish even far shorter theory books. The conclusion especially ties everything together in a fascinating and satisfyingly coherent closing statement. Definitely recommend if you're at all interested in film theory.
