The Chosen by J.R. Ward
5.0
Layla and Xcor. This should be nothing but excitement, drama, suspense, drama, drama, drama. Should be fun!
And herein was the conundrum, Xcor thought behind his closed lids. The only possible way out of this deadly scenario was to reveal the love he’d found for a female who was not his, never had been, and was not e’er going to be.
But he would not sacrifice the Chosen Layla for anyone or anything.
Not even to save himself.
I can see there’s gonna be an awful lot of come-to-Jesus moments throughout this book. Qhuinn is being his usual self, which means I’m 50/50 on empathy with him; Blay is getting the shaft and hurting, which I’m not cool with; and Layla is struggling, although tbh, I thought she should have handled all of this differently to begin with. ‘Course then this story wouldn’t exist so what do I know?
I didn’t realize Therese and Trez would be introduced so soon…
Later, she would wonder exactly why she stepped up. After all, the guy could have been a stalker ID-ing his next target, some kind of mentally unstable whack job in a city where she knew no one and had nobody to turn to if she got herself in over her head. But her instincts told her she was not in danger.
Of course, it turned out that that assumption was wrong, although not because he presented any physical threat to her. No, it was damage of another sort that he eventually brought.
Sometimes, though, for destiny to work, it had to make sure you were blind going into things. Otherwise, you would turn your wheel and hit your brakes…and avoid your fate like the plague.
I’m definitely feeling as if there are too many side plot lines. Again.
Qhuinn is on my last fucking nerve! How many psychotic breakdowns does he need to have before he gets his shit together. Not to mention I’m tired of the same fights between him and Blay. Tohr’s behavior, oth, I can almost understand except his complete disregard for Wrath’s decree. Boys with too much testosterone!
Really? Seriously, JR? We’re going back to V possibly wanting to cheat on Jane? Didn’t this shit and their relationship woes get tidied up? Come on. One more side line that doesn’t need to be there!
Layla is way more kickass than any of the males. Taking on Tohr the way she did was straight up awesome!
She was a mahmen. She was a lover. She was a proud female, a strong female, a female who knew right from wrong, family from stranger, good from evil. She had lived through two birthings and stood up to a Brother just now, and she would take on the King if she had to. She was fallible and could get confused and might well flounder from time to time.
But she would survive. That was what the strong did.
Meeting her eyes in the mirror, she looked at her face for what felt like the first time. She had spent all those years waiting in the Sanctuary to be called into her role as ehros, her existence at once totally dictated and yet groundless, for there was no Primale to pleasure. And then she had bumped and bounced around on earth after she and her sisters had been freed, tiptoeing timidly in the unfamiliar ways of modern life. There had been the desperate needing with Qhuinn, and then the anxiety as the young had grown within her—during which her life had been split in half with Xcor. Following that? The birth that had nearly killed her and now the agony of the disintegration of her family unit…and the pending loss of Xcor.
Yet she was still alive and she was here. Looking at herself in the mirror.
And for the first time in her life, she respected what she saw. Bowing to her reflection, she said softly, “Pleased to meet you.”
After my many criticisms enclosed here, you might wonder why I’m still giving this a 5* rating… pretty much it’s mainly because of Layla and Xcor. Mostly Layla but Xcor has truly proven himself! So, I loved their portion of this book.
