The War I Finally Won
by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
“What’s right and what’s permitted are sometimes different things.”
I really enjoyed learning more about their lives, and watching the characters develop. Lady Thornton is a dynamic character in this book that was a background character in the first one.
What really stood out to me was how well the people were written with flaws, weaknesses and irritations. Each character shows their best and worst and it makes you love them even more. Susan goes into her dark place, Lady Thornton is unkind/afraid and also her grief overwhelms her life. Ada is hurtful when she gets angry.
Ada discovering the world feels real, and when she would get irritated or frustrated I felt it for her. It also felt age appropriate.
I have read a significant number of historical fiction books set during WWII, but for some reason this simple and sweet children’s book gave me a new perspective on the plight of the German citizen, and the Jewish German. It brought me to tears in its wise and simple sorry telling as Ada learned to understand who Ruth was and her feelings grew from fear to sisterly love.
The use of the horses is also a very nice element to this book, the riding and freedom, all of it is just right.
