Bone Crier's Moon
by Kathryn Purdie
This book was overall fine.

The world… was a bit simplistic in my eyes. I wanted more, if there are ghost’s and Bone Criers you would think this book would have more fantasy elements but it didn’t and that was a bit boring and disappointing. The descriptions also severely lacked and I kept growing bored at several points.
I wasn’t crazy about the Bone Criers. I NEVER accept animal sacrifice and I absolutely hated some of the scenes in this. The shark in the beginning… On top of this I wanted more about them, how do they live, how are they educated, what do they do all day, how does the community work, are they trained like warriors? I had a feeling that this book was so focused on the romance and running around (with no clear goal) that ‘simple’ things were over looked.
I found the enemy to lovers in this book interesting (fave trope). I did want a little bit more debt and development in the romance but overall it was fine, though it will never be an OTP. I liked how everything was resolved in that Bastien wasn’t her true love and that this second guy was introduced and that he was her amory. That was actually the only thing that I really liked about this book and the main reason I have it 3 stars.
The plot was not that intriguing. I had a feeling it just kept going at the same pace. And the weird thing was that even though something was happening at every moment in this book I did grow bored and impatient with this book, I think that was due to this book being a bit too long; 480 pages. I had the feeling that the same thing was happening over and over again; Sabine was disappointing the matriarch and doubting the killing, Bastien and Ailesse were hating (and later loving) each other or running away from ghost’s, oh and the bone flute was stolen or lost. It was just kind of monotonous and never grew to a climax. There also weren’t enough surprises and twists to really keep me engaged in the book and it grew quite tedious. I did like to find out that they were sisters though!
The characters were also fine.. Not super special, but also not annoying (besides Jules, who I wanted to strangle a few times). I did find that there were not as much side characters since the main cast was only 6/7 characters which was also quite simplistic and bored me after a while. I did LOVE the friendship between the female main characters and I hope to see more of them together in the next book.
The ending really sucked in my eyes. I feel like this book might be better of being a standalone. This book was kind of slow and lacked answers in the end (what’s the deal with the owl??), and everything could have been solved by just killing the new guy and them living happily ever after. I had the feeling that this new problem was created just so there could be a sequel.
Audiobook review: 2/5 stars
Narrators: Fiona Hardingham, Alex Wyndham and Billie Fulford-Brown.
I enjoyed that every pov had its own voice and the girls’ voices were alright (a bit whiney though). However the guy was just awful, I felt like the whole book he was very monotonous but in a whispering, exciting way which is suitably only for a tense scene. They probably had to redo lines, so you can really hear the quality difference between some sentences (Scribd version). I do think the story is suited for reading on audio since the world and plot are simple enough to follow. I just didn’t like the book as much and due to that I kept getting distracted a few times.
