I read this book thinking it’s so timely coz of everything that’s happening right now with immigration. But the author started writing this in 2009. She published it in 2017. America has been separating families and housing migrants in detention centers and doing mass deportations for decades..

This is a very contemporary American story. I do have some critiques even though I enjoyed reading this a lot. The novel is split in two parts with two different narrators and while this gives the reader an interesting perspective it feels a bit disjointed at times.
