Deep River Night
by Patrick Lane
Every character is masterfully written to be as hateable as possible while simultaneously being as boring as possible with little to no character growth. This is magnified by how boring the story is and the few tiny sprinkles of interest being spread across 400 pages, with the first hint of any conflict or interest taking place nearly 200 pages in and seemingly forgotten about until the last 50 pages. The setting of this story; while I'm sure very accurately gloomy, is much too depressing to want to immerse yourself in. Overall, this book suffers from a severe pacing issue, as well as general lack of development, nothing to engage the reader. I won't deny that it is written with skill when it comes to style and composition, but this was not enough for me.
If you suffer from any sort of depression or are easily brought down, I would not recommend trying to read this
