In the Bleak Midwinter
by Julia Spencer-Fleming
This was a slow-growing appreciation. The first half of the book I was going through the motions, reading a well-paced story but not really engaged. But then the character of Episcopalian priest Clare Fergusson took hold. She reminds me of everything I love in a heroine -- brave, smart, caring, thoughtful, and tough as nails. She' a priest who drives an MG, has military training, and occasionally swears. And she's falling for the married chief of police. I'm hooked. Imagine my delight to find there are at least seven more books to read!
