Burned by Kristin Cast, P.C. Cast

5.0

This is the first House of Night book I've reviewed, as I wanted to go as far as possible before I reviewed it. Well, there's still almost a week until the eighth instalment, and I thought I may aswell review it now.

Both P.C and Kristin Cast wrote this series, and the writing style does fluctuate slightly, although it isn't noticeable. The writing is perfectly fine for a young adult novel; it's descriptive and grips you, and also keeps a flow in the plot. But it doesn't stand out as being magnificent, so don't expect Shakespeare. The main thing that irritated me was the constant "teen talk." I don't really know anyone that talks like that, and BFF, I heart you etc. gets a bit old after 7 books. But mainly, it's all good.

The series starts off as rather flowery and bubbly, like most YA books. But in the fourth book, you really start to notice the change. Things get more complicated, and the story gets generally darker. The characters do adapt well, and develop in a suitable way. They all become more serious, and other characters take the spotlight. You see less of Zoey's friends, such as Damien and the Twins, and more of the other, higher up characters. Stevie-Rae really gets her chance to shine in Burned, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading from her point of view.

The love story between Rephaim and Stevie Rae is my prime interest in the book at the moment. As exciting as it is to hear about Zoey and the other world, Stevie-Rae and Rephaim just win.

So all in all, it's a really good series, and worth reading.
