Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover

4.0

Okay, this was actually good. Not insanely good but good in a it-made-feel-something-new kind of way. There was a lot about the plot, not all of it, that felt wrong to me. At one point my thoughts were just fixed on repeating one sentence, how is this not different from every other romance novel where the girl is ignoring red flags, there is awesome tension and chemistry and the boy is emotionally distant and closed off? How? I swear the book hit it's lowest for me when the "armor around feelings and ice around heart" metaphors were the only dimension in Miles character in the present day POV. The use of italics and the-tell-rather-than-show writing were a little irritating sometimes. Please have faith in your readers that they will understand that when you write about 'feel' you don't have to put them in italics for us to know that it is is a big deal, that it is different.

This is a popular booktok book so I just to have to say this: Ugly Love is Punk 57 but better and with closure. I know the plot is different and it is a different category of booktok romance but also it is not. I was really disappointed in Punk 57. It had so much potential and it just ended so bad like the author couldn't be bothered with putting all the plot points to a close. That is one of the bigger reasons for me actually liking this book: the closure, the giving every plot point the necessary place in the ending and the slow but steady move upwards in the emotional state.

I loved the writing in the past day POVs, so sweet, so wholesome and so not toxic. It was interesting to try and read it in ways the writer intended it to impact our minds. The last POV about the first meeting just tied this up together so well, it made me so happy and just melted my heart. I was actually happy-sad by the end of the epilogue.
