This book was good in theory, but in practice was rather messily presented. A lot of jargon was used without explanation - there is a glossary, but that shouldn't be the only place certain terms are explained!
The pace was quite slow and lacked tension, and the characters difficult to care about. A lot of the fantasy aspect felt arbitrary to the plot, and considering it talked a lot about dragons at the beginning it took a long time for their presence to actually add anything to the story. If the first have was shorter it would probably be a much better read - the scene-setting was poorly executed which made the first half a bit of a slog.
By the end I was definitely interested and would probably read the second one if it was already out, though not sure if I'll seek it out by the time it is published.
