This book is a very similar style to her other, Nothing to Envy, and again about a region I'm very unfamiliar with. I learned so much about China, Tibet, and their cultures and appreciated how readable the nonfiction was. I will say this book seemed to have a ton of characters and I had trouble with both keeping track and staying engaged as a result. The atrocities against the tibetans were also much more subtle in this situation - still egregious and wrong for sure, but a little harder to understand and follow. Overall still a very solid nonfiction piece that has completely changed my understanding of China, which is (basically) to say the world
