Whilst very well-written, I found it hard to suspend my feminism - the plot ENTIRELY revolves around protecting female purity, to the point that some allusion is made to it in every chapter. It felt like a story to boost male superiority, saviourism and ego in avenging their beautiful angelic women who were made ‘unclean.’ Other classics make this kind of perspective secondary to the plot, merely integrated into the backbone of the story, but this novel was entirely driven and motivated by it.
