SO DATED, and not in a good way, but in that sort of superior-to-thou, smarmy, 1950s way that we have left behind for the most part, thank goodness. Think Babbit, but with an author who has even less compassion for the main character. It makes sense that Ross McDonald's work is so profoundly empathetic if he had to live under the scrutiny of someone who writes like she lives for the opportunity to judge someone and find him or her wanting.
