I'll admit that, not being familiar with Bengali culture, some of the cultural nuances were lost on me but I still felt richer for the experience and anything I missed on that front was purely my own fault.
My rating comes more from the fact I can't tell whether my lack of enjoyment came from the translation being choppy or the story itself not being long enough to execute its ideas properly. The lack of anything marking the passage of time was what really hurt the pacing because I had no idea how much time had passed between events.
Also this book was advertised as being funny but, minus Pishima's sassy commentary, I didn't really laugh at all.
