The Way of Shadows by Brent Weeks
2.0
Many people really enjoy this book. I'm glad. People like different things.
Me? I picked it up based on a strong recommendations, but only finished it because there was a delay in getting my next book from the library. While there are a few cool images in the book (notably the vir), there was, for me, very little to like. I didn't find the main characters at all sympathetic—they were unlikable, poorly developed, and had inconsistent motivations, flip-flopping from scene to scene. The inclusion of certain magical secondary characters felt completely tacked on; they might as well have been in a different story.
So, generally a slog. Made worse by the terms that Weeks chose for characters to use, notably "wetboy" and "deader". They sound like words a 13-year-old made up, but not what a bunch of serious-minded assassins would use when talking about themselves or their work.
Oh, and the protagonist, who's one of these super assassins (in training), is called "Kylar", which is obviously just a funny way to say "killer". Very distracting.
