The Sapphire Rose
by David Eddings
Okay, first I want to preface this by saying that the world-building and characters are still both fantastic elements of this trilogy. Every different part of the world feels fully-realized, and the characters are unique and memorable. I have no problems with either of these things.
Neither did I find any problems with the action sequences. I thought they were written well and moved the plot along at a decent pace. The fighting was handled well and I could follow what was happening without too much trouble. Kurik's death was beautifully done and made my heart ache to read through.
Even the ending felt satisfactory. It felt like a good conclusion while still allowing for more of the story to be written in the future.
The problem I have with this book is the "romance" between Sparhawk and the queen. It happened so suddenly, and Sparhawk was more or less forced into marriage. True he eventually seemed happy with the situation but it just felt uncomfortable for me. And since their relationship took on a bigger role in this book, I have to give it a lower rating due to the way it was handled. If I were honest, I would say I would've enjoyed this book much more if the romance was never even a factor.
The rest of it was enjoyable and I closed the book feeling good about the journey I took.
