This is a dense and detailed history of DC and black Americans, and how DC was shaped by racism. I learned a ton about my current home, and while it wasn’t a newsflash to find out how much of the current period has been shaped by racism, the range and depth of that racism was surprising.
ETA: with the current wave of protests and police violence that is covering the US, with Federal being called in to the District by this administration to intimidate protesters, this book and its lessons about the lengths white America has gone to to avoid treating Black Americans like citizens is even more important.
