New X-Men, Volume 1: E Is for Extinction
by Grant Morrison
It was a solid superhero read. The ease with which Genosha was wiped out seemed anti-climatic for me. I think Morrison was going for awesome and terrifying, but by the end of this book, I was scratching my head, wondering what happened to those Sentinels that wiped out Genosha? Where are they? They wipe out an island, and then they are dropped from the narrative. They're just gone.
And the revelation of Xavier's evil womb-twin was.... well, I'd rather just forget that it ever happened. What a tired old cliche. Ick.
There were a few positives. I enjoyed Morrison's take on Cyclops' as the leader and pointman, Wolverine as the wizened veteran, the tension between Scott and Jean - Beast seemed to stand around and spout off too much exposition for my tastes, though. His main function was to explain things to the reader.
Quitely did a great job. Nice page layouts, strong sense of detail, and imaginative characters. Overall, it was an okay read, but nothing memorable.
