Very, very rarely do I ever care about the romance vs. women's lit discourse, but just this once... This is not romance. There is a romantic subplot, but it's such a small portion of the book and also probably the weakest imo. And I bring this up because I think it's immportant to have the right expectations; I probably would have enjoyed this a lot more if I had not been expecting a romance going into it.
That said, I'm not sure how much expectations could have saved this for me. I found Serena insufferable (but realistic and well written!). She was just very hyporitical and petty, so I couldn't root for her, even while I recognize that those flaws were intentional and even the point.
