Hour of the Witch
by Chris Bohjalian
The year is 1662 in Boston. Mary Deerfield is married to a cruel and violent but powerful man. In a drunken fury, he physically assaults Mary, and she resolves to leave him. In this age of witch hunts, her friendship with another woman as well as some objects found in her home, lead to gossip about witchcraft. The suspicions get more complex as more strange occurrences lead to a riveting and twisted tale.
This book started slow with a building of Mary’s life and the difficulty she has with her marriage as well as the yearnings she has for a more robust, fulfilling life. But once the action starts, I could not stop reading. This was a dark and thrilling ride in to the world of witch hunts and trials.
I was completely engrossed in this book. The sense of time and place that the author builds kept me interested. Additionally, Mary Deerfield was a character you wanted to root for to see her through her plight. The tension was building as the chapters went on and the ending was surprising.
I would recommend this to anyone looking for a witchy read, fans of historical fiction or suspenseful books.
