The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom
by Christopher Healy
This book is a good read aloud book. It is written more for elementary school kids but they might be intimidated by it's size. Though the more I think about it, this is a good book for kids who are reading above their grade level but aren't really ready for middle school and teen content.
This is the story of what happens after happily ever after, when everyone has gone home and now have to live with someone for the rest of their lives whom they just met. What does it say about a prince who is going to marry someone he met at a ball? If your parents knew you were going to be cursed to sleep for 100 years how would they treat you? If you were the kind of person who spoke to animals do you think you'd have very many friends? What if the princess you rescued has nothing in common with you? What if in your story you were portrayed as poorly as the prince in Rapunzel?
I love fairy tale retellings and this one was pretty amazing. The story was fun and interesting and I loved that it was unique in a world of fairy tale retellings. There are a lot of them out there and I have read many of them.
Four princes have found themselves in one way or another with a princess. Through their deeds there are songs out telling of their actions for better or worse. Unfortunately the bards didn't care to catch their names and they are all just generic 'prince charmings'
Each prince finds that happily ever after is not guaranteed and worrying too much about how other people think of you is overrated. I mean it's not going to stop you from worrying but still we all know it's totally overrated.
Romping good fun, again many would enjoy it more as a bed time story than something to be read on their own. But I think that kids who love reading --fourth grade on up looking for a fairy tale reworking would enjoy this book.
