The Black Moon
by Winston Graham
I'm not sure if it's because Graham wrote this novel so long after finishing the last one (he took a twenty-year break from the Poldark story between books 4 and 5), but this one fell a little flat for me. There were fewer story lines overall than the previous installments, and of the few there were, the main story about Demelza's brother was a rather boring, very obvious plot device meant to draw Ross and George into conflict yet again. At least there was the rescue of the esteemed Dwight Enys from a French prison camp to keep me interested, and the last 100 pages were powerfully written, almost as if this was where Graham finally got the hang of it again. A lot was set up for book six, so I have my fingers crossed that it will live up to the earlier books in the series.
