How We Fall Apart by Katie Zhao

1.0

Started off with potential and then flopped towards the middle. This was really predictable. It felt like every other YA mystery book that I've read before. I really wish the mystery was done differently but it was the same old same old.

The characters are so underdeveloped and unlikeable. I thought each of the four main characters would have their own point of view throughout the story but the novel's only told through Nancy's perspective. I didn't really care much at Nancy. She's not likable but she's not a main character that you can secretly root for. Out of the four characters, Krystal and Alexander had the most potential and I think one of the two should've been the lead character rather than Nancy.

For a mystery/thriller book, NOTHING happens! Like the main characters secrets will get revealed, the whole school gossips about it for a day or two and that's it! The stakes aren't high and there's no point in revealing the main characters darkest secrets if there aren't no long term side effects of it. The reveal was half assed and rushed. I wasn't too surprised because I predicted it but it could've been done way better if time was spent in developing the characters and the mystery aspect of the story.

One of the few good things about this book is that it is very fast paced and easy to read. I'm just confused on what the plot of a second book would be about. Peter and The Golden Trio's dark secret? How is the author going to drag that little plot twist for one more book? I'm not interested in reading the 2nd book so I could care less.
