The Institute by Stephen King

4.0

My first Stephen King book and I loved it! I usually follow the 'read the book first and watch the screen adaptation later' rule, but I dont know why or how, somehow with all the Stephen King books, I've watched the movies first and that made me not want to read the books anymore, thinking, I already know the plot and what is going to happen, so will there be a point?

So that is what happened with The Shining, The first IT movie, Pet Semetary and Carrie. Thankfully, this didnt happen with The Institute and I'm glad I read the book.

The plot reminded me of a lot of my favorite movie plots - a mix of Stranger Things, and Government conspiracies like those in the X Files. I think this could be categorised under middle grade since the protagonists were 12-16 year olds, but it might be a heavy book for a 12 year old to read? I dont know what 12 year olds read these days though.

Loved his style of writing, the pace of the story and the debate at the end - is it worth sacrificing a few to save a probable many? When do you know how to draw the line between protecting and being a zealot? And what a cast of characters! My heart broke in so many places. This defintely wasnt an easy read in terms of what was being done to these kids, I was cringing in a lot of scenes. So I was really happy, with one exception, with the ending I think.

Great book..I think I might read IT before I watch part 2 of the movie! :D
