The Girl Before by JP Delaney

Wow, I just finished this book and it was a great read! I’m not sure why it has so many negative reviews but to each there own.

I personally loved how both the stories of Emma and Jane are told by the author and we get a sense of Deja Vu as we jump between Emma’s story of living at One Folgate Street after a break in at her old place had left her rattled and in need of security and we then go back to the present with Jane, who after recently suffering a still born child and recovering from her loss also chooses the rule bound but modern One Folgate Street that allows no personal items in the home but gives users a futuristic experience with integrated technology to adjust to their every whim.

Both Jane and Emma look alike, despite never meeting, and both wanted to move to One Folgate Street after a personal tragedy or traumatic event to start over. Both women also have an affair with the architect, Edward Monkford however only one lives as Jane discovers Emma had died the year before in One Folgate Street and she doesn’t know if she can trust charming but controlling Edward or if he may be hiding something about the death of Emma.

I won’t spoil it but this was one of those rare thrillers were I didn’t see the ending coming a mile away and generally threw me for a loop with many twists. Characters and events you thought you knew turned out to be different. Also, between chapters it gives you samples of the survey questions used to get into One Folgate Street which on my opinion really added to the mindset of the story. Would you save yourself or others given the chance? What about saving your child if it meant sacrificing others? This helps build the pace as Jane pieces together what really happened with the Emma and who can she trust.
