naideraid 's review for:
Plain Bad Heroines
by Emily M. Danforth
Three stars might be a bit generous, but I didn't hate what I read, I just don't know quite what I read. I feel like the story that was trying to be told here both didn't work and wasn't done as well as it could have. Also, this is apparently an adult novel? Didn't read like one, except in some cases (re: sex & drugs). Again, it wasn't bad, but it was: 1) way too long; 2) overwritten in some parts (there were times I had to re-read multiple sentences/paragraphs because I just could not get the message there); 3) occasionally confusing (and not in a good way).
I do have to give the author props, though, because there were scenes that genuinely creeped me out and grossed me out, in equal measure. I just think it could have benefited from more editing and also clarification as to what the intended message was. Or if there even was one. I don't want to have to find out from author's notes what you meant in your book. Your book should be enough on its own.
Side note: I read this on the Kindle and I wouldn't recommend it. If you absolutely need to read this book, buy or rent it from the library. The e-copy certainly doesn't do the illustrations justice, for one. Plus, because of the illustrations, the formatting was a little off. Mostly, it just ruins the effect the book is going for, which is a shame.
Overall, I'm not disappointed (mostly because I saw the low reviews it was getting, so I tempered my expectations), I'm just... confused and tired. That last one is mostly due to me (possibly) getting sick, though, so take that with a grain of salt.
