A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
by George R.R. Martin
Oh George, how you torment me (or lead me to torment myself). You create Sansa Stark, one of my most beloved characters in all fiction (not to mention some other complex, wonderful characters--Jaime Lannister, Arya Stark, Jon Snow). And then while I am driven to distraction waiting to learn their fates, you release this. I have no one to blame but myself for reading it in my desperation for more content, and really, Fire and Blood was quite enjoyable. But this. Oh George. This is everything I don't like about his writing and nothing I love.
I will admit that the Bloodraven content was interesting, and the redhaired widow was a great character who I enjoyed meeting. But being in Dunk's head--it was like an extended Sam Tarly chapter without my investment in any adjacent plots. This made me LONG for Reek. The worst of it was the repetition of certain phrases: "Dunk the lunk, thick as a castle wall" "Tamsyn the tall, but not too tall for him" "I'll clout your ear" "How many eyes does bloodraven have? A thousand and one" were repeated so many times they would make for a dangerous drinking game. Dunk has a good heart, but lacks any of the trademark complexity of the characters in ASOIF or F&B. George I beg you, just give us Sansa's defeat of Littlefinger, I need it! All hail the Queen In The North!
