The Future of Us
by Jay Asher, Carolyn Mackler
I wanted to like this book so much more than I did. The premise is really interesting and some of the book is nostalgic--AOL just starting up...dial-up modems, etc. It is an interesting thought---a portal to Facebook 15 years in the future. The problem is that I could care less about the heroine Emma. I found her whiney and annoying. She seems so self-centered and cruel because she doesn't like her future. The other main character/hero Josh. He is just too cookie cutter. Some plot developments just are left without being wrapped up and I think the book would be better if the plot revolving about Josh's brother David was wrapped-up a bit. There is promise and some good messages to teens about sex, friendship and stuff. But, I think they get lost. I read this book in two-days and it is an easy read and an enjoyable one. But there is something missing and I don't think my students will respond to this book.
