Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld
4.0
I selected this book on recommendation from the good folks at Brass Goggles (online steampunk community). I was fortunate enough to find a copy at the local Half-Price Books for a mere $8 - a reasonable price for a very well-written start to a trilogy.
Despite the book being geared for a younger audience, I didn't get bored with it. The story line blends historical events with fictitious elements, but it doesn't really seem that far-fetched (considering the main setting for one of the characters is aboard a whale that has been genetically enhanced to fly using engines, etc).
The two main characters were easy to follow, despite the chapters bouncing between the two; their adventures were never confusing, and despite being able to deduce that their paths would eventually cross, it was still exciting when it happened.
Imagine my dismay, however, when I reach the end, only hoping to flip the page for the story to continue, then realizing that it's the first of a trilogy! #facepalm
I will definitely be picking up the 2nd book soon, and (im)patiently waiting for the 3rd to be released.
