Cliffhanger ending. 
Author’s note that it will likely be a 4 part series ~ 3rd and 4th books haven’t been started - no research or any writing. Author is taking a break from heavily researched books. This one has historical references to actual eventS/people and also lore of fantasy books related to fantasy/magic characters: vampires, witches (Strega), werewolves.
A little hard to keep track of all of the characters and their backstories for side characters.
