I listened to this as an audiobook and very much enjoyed it! I'm not entirely sure it needed to be quite as long as it did, but I tend to think that about most forms of media. (the TV bloat of the streaming era is a crime.) It's exactly the kind of dense, politically inflected fantasy I very much enjoy, and I found both Malini and Priya compelling characters (even if occasionally too self-aware.) The setting, a loose version of fantasy India, had politics that were coherent and complex, and there's a great pleasure in seeing all of the little wind-up characters whirr around in their intricate little patterns as the book really gets going. Also, finally, a hashtag wlw enemies to lovers romance that I actually enjoy reading, perhaps because it doesn't tie up neatly at the end.
Graphic: Child death, Religious bigotry, and Sexism
