This was an interesting book club pick which I would probably never have picked up otherwise. It didn't totally work for me but I'm still pleased I've read it because it's one of those books I've heard about for years. I tend to enjoy stories featuring secret societies and magic so I enjoyed the ideas in this, even if I didn't always like the execution. I maybe would have preferred it if it was told in a linear narrative. In the earlier timelines Alex didn't know anything and in the later timeline she suddenly knew a lot and I wish that as a reader I could have learnt about the world with her. Especially at the beginning I felt that even though Bardugo included a lot of information, I was still confused about how the societies and magic worked. I also felt like the pacing was a little uneven but when I was interested I was hooked and I read the second half in one day. I won't be reading the next one but I am at least glad I know what this one is like now.
