Look to Windward
by Iain M. Banks
An exploration of the fallout of 2 wars; the first of them being the Culture-Idiran War of the inaugural book in the series about t0 be commemorated as the light of 3 stars extinguished in one of the final battles of the war reaches a distant orbital habitat now run by a Culture "Mind" that fought in the battle 800 years ago as one of the warships; the second a more recent vicious Alien civil war accidentally initiated by the Culture's famous covert interventions.
As is the case with many Culture books the story just sort of rolls forward before accelerating rapidly and ending in a series of gut punches.
I won't soon forget the conclusion of this book, and I hope that somewhere in the vast reaches of Space there are behemothaur diribles flying around.
