alyssagildea 's review for:
Year One
by Nora Roberts
I was really looking forward to this, and I did enjoy it, but at times it was very cheesy and cliche--by the end I was getting irritated. Characters were forgettable, and a love-at-first-sight romance towards the end rubbed me wrong. In fact, any "romantic moments" would come out of left field with no hints or backstory to warrant them. I wish those had been left completely out. Also, momentous events were glossed over (Roberts took all of one sentence to kill off a main character...) and too much time was spent on irrelevant details (...but she took multiple paragraphs detailing the interior of a bedroom and bathroom). Proportion was definitely off here. This was my first experience with Nora Roberts, so if you really enjoy her writing, maybe this is for you. I would likely not consider listening to the next book if I hadn't already bought it on sale. Also, unpopular opinion: Julia Whelan isn't my favorite narrator so her style may have contributed to the feelings of cheesiness.
