The Cabinet of Curiosities (Pendergast, #3) by Douglas Preston

2.0

Pendergast is back with a few of the characters of the previous two books in the series, most notably Bill Smithback. Most disappointingly D'Agosta does not feature in this instalment which is a shame as he was my favourite character of the series to now.

Unfortunately I decided to listen to the audiobook and only an abridged version was available on Scribd. Normally I find that these edits are done rather well, but this is not the case with the Cabinet of Curiosities. There were many instances where I was left dumbfounded as to how the story line suddenly changed only to remember that I was listening to an abridged version. I still don't get it why publishers want to sell abridged versions of their books. If I were an author, I would never allow it. (I'm sulky if you can't tell).

Not withstanding my gripe above, the story had all the ingredients of being another good one. However, the editing left me so unhappy that I could not in good conscience rate it more than two stars. I considered rating it three stars, but that would be a lie as I would not recommend anyone listening to this abridged version. It is without a doubt the worst abridged book I've ever listened to in terms of continuity.
