The Boxcar Children
by Gertrude Chandler Warner
I loved these books as a kid, and remember my 2nd grade teacher giving us a warning that it was set during simpler, safer times and not to try living on our own like the Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny. For some reason I thought these were set in the 1950's, but they were actually much earlier than that. Now as an adult with more context about the 1920's I can see where these stories would have their place, although the children are too trusting and the adults were all very laid back about a group of orphaned children living in the woods. The children also show no signs of grief over the loss of both of their parents at such a young age, or give any context about their former life or how long they've been on their own, which struck me as strange. Still a charming and nostalgic read with the suspension of some disbelief.
