One of my favourite books I have read in 2025. Full of love and daring. As a Brit, I am only vaguely familiar with Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer so this book was incredibly fresh to me.

James is one of the best written characters I've followed, and how he interacts with the world around him led to both tense and freeing chapters. Huck was also beautifully written, and the relationship between the two had such an interesting dynamic that made me not want to put this book down.

The links between the historic and contemporary racism faced by those in the world rode the line expertly - not verging on preachy, but not too subtle for anyone to miss the point.

One of the best written books, and a modern classic.
