The Great Cow Race by Jeff Smith

4.0

Man, get ready, because this is the last volume which is mostly silly. At the end of this book, you really get to see how dramatic things are going to get.

But, for now, a cow race! And the top contender is...Grandma, the human! Not...a cow. Yes, the village in the valley entertains itself by setting up a big festival for a cow race, while allowing a human to beat it consistently for decades. Still, there's maybe some room for more...interesting goings on. There will be a mystery entrant this year, says Phoney Bone, the little marshmallow creature who has so far proved himself to be, well...a complete shyster. No reason to question him!

I don't mean to ridicule the plot. Because, really, it's still quite a delight to see the Bones all back together and showing off their individual personalities. After so much time lost in the first book, this book really lets you get to know the family, and how they interact with one another.

And, in the background, we see the rat creatures and their scheming and we begin to realize that this series won't be silly all the time.

I said it in my review of the previous book: make sure you have the entire series on hand. After this, there's no real stopping.
