This graphic novel is autofiction of Christina Soontornvat’s experience trying out for the cheerleading team in middle school.
I have previously read and adored both A Wish in the Dark and The Last Mapmaker by this author (the former being one of my favorite middle grades of ALL TIME), but when this one came out, it seemed like it would be suited for a younger audience, so I wasn’t originally going to pick it up. But clearly, Robin Garabedian knew better, and when she passed this along to me, I gobbled it right up.
I love, love, love the art style of this graphic novel, and also just loved getting to know pre-teen Christina in this format! I laughed out loud at her super nerdy moments and truly hope we would have been friends if we were in middle school together
