No Gods, No Monsters
by Cadwell Turnbull
Some storylines paid off, while others didn't. I guess that's more clear if you come here and see this listed as #1 in a saga, but it wasn't really clear to me. I think I would have preferred this book with a few of the storylines that didn't go anywhere trimmed out or more integrated in this entry.
The main story seemed like it would have been stronger with a bit of pruning as well. The goals of being mysterious and setting up a large cast of characters might just be at odds with each other. The underlying metaphor worked for me, and I liked the idea of a magical battle brewing. I have a feeling that the saga could turn out to be better than the first entry once it gets going.
P.S. Sisters named Sonya and Sondra coming in when I was already keeping track of a lot of characters didn't help me with keeping all the names straight. I was listening to the audiobook at times, but I ultimately had to re-read some of those parts to make sure I followed what was happening. I'd recommend reading rather than listening for this one.
