The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller
5.0
I implore you, if you read one book in your life, let it be this one (or Simon, we will never not love Simon). This book was so incredible- everything about it had me completely entranced. I know the story of Achilles, I know all about the Trojan war, I know who Patroclus and Agamemnon are, but did that stop me free literally squeaking out loud and sobbing violently at three am? Absolutely not!
This is the story of Patroclus, a prince in Ancient Greece who is exiled and ends up living with Achilles, the boy destined to be the 'best of the Greeks'. This is in part their live story (and this ship has quickly become one of my all time favourites), and in part their life story as they grow from children to soldiers.
I LOVED THIS BOOK. I loved the characters, I loved the writing, I loved the story, I loved the setting, and I love love love the relationship between Patroclus and Achilles. Oh my god(s) I can not tell you how many pink tabs I had in this book. And if you know the story of the Trojan War (which I did and still literally screamed with tears- the true mark of a good book) you will know that the ending will BREAK YOUR HEART. Except you don't know that, because nothing can prepare you for the ending. Trust me, you know nothing about the heartbreak to come.
So, so good. Please read this.
