I liked the movie better (I can now say that about two books, the other being The Princess Bride). The characters were unlikable until the end. Not enough magic, not enough aunts.

While there is some animal cruelty and death, most of the animals make it through the book okay, or die of old age. What was there wasn't pleasant, but it wasn't traumatic to read (upsetting, but not traumatic).
