This book is a critique of empire wearing the trenchcoat of a spy thriller with a romance subplot. And I found this delightful since I was hoping it wasn't primarily a romance novel. I found the themes, characters, and plot compelling, but my favorite part was the language. Kaliane Bradley has a vivid and unique writing style, and I even had the rare delight of learning some new words!
