Having enjoyed Intercepted, I admit coming to this story with high expectations. That is perhaps why I was so disappointed with the second installment in the Playbook series. There was a serious problem with tension building in the story, there were too many things thrown in but none of them amounted to much. Poppy and TK were involved in high school until she found herself pregnant with Ace. When they meet again he is a successful and rich football player while she struggles to make a living waitressing in a sleazy dive. Usually the secret baby trope comes with a series of misunderstanding between the main couple, but here it was diffused rather quickly when TK came to his senses and realized Ace is indeed his son.
There are two women who are sort of villainesses in the book both barely make a dent in the couples stride towards being together, a jealous co worker and the hero's mother. As both do a very poor job in keeping them apart another problem is introduced, the permanent damage from head injury in the sport. This was tackled better in another romance I've rad recently, The Right Swipe by Alisha Rai. Even the humor that made Intercepted such a fun read was missing here. So all in all, I think this series has a lot of potential if the author sticks to the lighthearted tone of the first novel, and the peeks to the life behind the scenes of the wives and girlfriends of the pro players.
